Lighting can be used in many different ways, sometimes to draw attention and sometimes to create suspense.
The different types of lighting:
Three point lighting;
Consists of a key light, fill light and a backlight.
Key light:
-Shon directly at the main subject of the shot
-Brightest of the three
Fill light:
-Softer and less prominent then the key light
-Typically placed opposite the key light
-Softens shadows on the main subject of the shot
Backlight:
-Adds depth to the shot
-Placed directly behind the main subject of the shot
High key;
-Using a high proportion of key light and fill light
-Brighter and illuminates the subject from the front
-More even lighting across the whole shot
Low key;
-Low key and fill light used
-Creates shadows
-Typically used in horrors and thrillers for mysterious effects
High and low key combination;
-Creates a contrast
-Impression of two separate worlds
-Allows for two different atmosphere's and adds a different dimension
