Research into make up and hair

Makeup artists aren’t usually something that you consider when you’re watching a movie or a TV show, which just goes to show how well they are doing their jobs. Makeup artists are absolutely essential when it comes to TV and film as they can make the audience believe that what they are seeing on the screen is real. If viewers don’t believe or buy into what they are watching, they will usually lose interest pretty fast.

The role of a makeup artist within a film is to connect the plot and feel of the film to the visuals of what the characters present and display and make a seamless connection so that the makeup matches the mood and atmosphere.

The hardest part of their role is to also compliment the film by implementing the hair and makeup as a benefiting feature to the film, for example in the image above an iconic feature to the batman film was the makeup used. 


When it comes to a TV or film set, there is usually a team of makeup artists, not just one individual. This team is often made up of a chief makeup artist (also known as a makeup designer), a makeup supervisor, a makeup artist and a makeup assistant. Who attends is usually dependant on the scale of the production.

Research into costumes

Costumes or general clothing is an important part of every film as it can give a sense of atmosphere which is unique to that film in particular.

From these two pictures the viewer notices the contrasts in lifestyle's which is what makes the film so unique, on one side you see the poverty and on the other is the extravagant and almost futuristic side to their lives.

Although there is nothing stand out about simple clothing used in films and other forms of media, it still gives for a different sense of atmosphere as the director wants to present the children in the series as normal yet the storyline is eccentric and mysterious.
